01 / THE BIG PICTURE

A business investment.
A potential tax advantage.

Section 179 can let eligible businesses deduct qualifying equipment costs in the year they put that equipment to work. Think of it as a way to accelerate a deduction, subject to your business’s circumstances.

A deduction is not a rebate.

A $60,000 deduction at an assumed 24% federal marginal tax rate illustrates $14,400 in federal income-tax reduction—not a $60,000 refund. Your actual benefit depends on your tax situation.

02 / MAKE THE NUMBERS TANGIBLE

What could a
deduction mean?

Start with a deduction amount your CPA considers allowable. Adjust the assumptions to see the simple relationship between a deduction and a federal tax rate.

Which deduction amount should I enter?

Enter an assumed deduction your CPA considers allowable—not automatically the truck price. It should already reflect business use, vehicle limits, taxable income, and other equipment purchases. The tax rate is also an assumption, not a recommendation.

A deduction often changes the timing of cost recovery. It does not necessarily create additional lifetime deductions. Ask your CPA whether accelerating deductions fits your plans.

GVWR is the manufacturer’s rating, not curb weight. Certain pickups with a qualifying cargo area at least six feet in interior length may be excepted from the heavy-SUV cap. Have your CPA confirm all requirements for the actual vehicle. Read the IRS vehicle rules

04 / THE LOCAL DIFFERENCE

Massachusetts has
its own rules.

Do not assume a federal deduction creates the same state deduction.

For tax years beginning in 2025 and 2026, Massachusetts disallows the expanded federal Section 179 limits enacted in Public Law 119-21 to the extent specified by state law. Massachusetts also generally disallows federal bonus depreciation under Section 168(k).

Your next step: Ask your CPA to calculate federal and Massachusetts results separately for your business structure.

06 / STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Good questions.
Better planning.

Section 179 questions for commercial truck buyers in Kingston, the South Shore, and Cape Cod. Use these answers to prepare for a conversation with your accountant.

What is Section 179?

Section 179 is a federal election to deduct eligible business equipment costs in the year the property is placed in service, subject to limits, instead of recovering those costs only through depreciation over time. A deduction reduces taxable income; it is not a dollar-for-dollar tax credit.

What are the federal Section 179 limits for 2026?

For tax years beginning in 2026, the maximum deduction is $2,560,000. That limit is reduced dollar for dollar when total Section 179 property placed in service exceeds $4,090,000. A separate $32,000 Section 179 cap applies to certain heavy SUVs and other vehicles. The overall deduction ceiling and investment phaseout apply across the business; the heavy-SUV cap applies per vehicle. None guarantees a deduction for your truck.

Does every GMC truck qualify for a full deduction?

No. Model name alone does not establish eligibility. Your CPA must review the exact vehicle’s GVWR, body and cargo-area configuration, qualified business use, cost basis, and applicable income and annual limits. Passenger automobile limits or the heavy-SUV cap may apply.

Is a truck over 6,000 pounds automatically fully deductible?

No. GVWR means the manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating, not curb weight. The weight threshold is only one part of the rules. Certain vehicles over 6,000 and up to 14,000 pounds GVWR are subject to the heavy-SUV cap. A qualifying cargo area at least six feet in interior length can be an exception; your CPA should verify the full statutory requirements.

How much must I use the vehicle for business?

Qualified business use must exceed 50% for Section 179 treatment of listed property. Only the business-use share is considered. Ordinary commuting generally is personal use. Keep contemporaneous mileage and use records. A later drop to 50% or less can trigger recapture.

Do I need to pay cash, or can I finance the truck?

Financing does not by itself prevent a Section 179 election. An eligible purchased vehicle may qualify based on its qualifying cost, even if financed, rather than only the down payment. Your CPA should review ownership, business use, debt, and applicable limitations. Loan payments remain your responsibility.

Can a used GMC vehicle qualify?

Eligible used property purchased for business use may qualify. Related-party purchases and other excluded transactions can be restricted. Have your CPA review the purchase and the specific vehicle before assuming a deduction.

Does a lease qualify for Section 179?

A typical lease generally does not give the lessee ownership for a Section 179 deduction on the vehicle’s purchase cost. Business lease payments may be deductible under different rules. Tax ownership and contract terms matter; ask your CPA to compare buying, financing, and leasing.

Is December 31 the deadline?

For a calendar-year business seeking a 2026 deduction, the vehicle generally must be placed in service by December 31, 2026. It must be ready and available for its business use. An order, deposit, or signed purchase agreement alone is not enough. Fiscal-year businesses should confirm their own tax-year deadline.

Is Section 179 the same as bonus depreciation?

No. They are separate tax provisions with different restrictions. Federal law restored 100% bonus depreciation for certain qualified property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025, subject to detailed rules. Your CPA should compare both methods and any remaining depreciation. This page’s illustration does not calculate bonus depreciation.

Does Massachusetts follow the federal deduction?

Not in every respect. For tax years beginning in 2025 and 2026, Massachusetts disallows the federal Section 179 increase enacted in Public Law 119-21 to the extent specified by state law. Massachusetts also generally disallows federal bonus depreciation under Section 168(k). Ask your CPA to calculate state and federal results separately.

What if my business does not have enough taxable income?

Section 179 is subject to a taxable-income limit from the active conduct of a trade or business. Amounts limited by that rule may carry forward. Entity and owner-level rules can also apply. A purchase does not guarantee a current-year deduction or refund.

Can plows and other commercial upfits qualify?

Qualifying business equipment and upfits may be eligible, but classification, capitalization, installation, and placed-in-service timing matter. Share itemized invoices and the complete vehicle configuration with your CPA. Confirm installation and delivery timing with the dealership.

Can I claim Section 179 and use the standard mileage rate?

You cannot combine a Section 179 deduction with the standard mileage rate for the same vehicle. Claiming Section 179 can also prevent using the standard mileage method for that vehicle in later years. Ask your CPA to compare the available methods before you make the election. Review IRS vehicle expense guidance.

What should I bring to my CPA?

Bring the proposed purchase agreement, VIN and GVWR documentation, bed or cargo-area details, upfit invoices, expected business-use percentage, mileage records, planned in-service date, and a list of other equipment purchases. Ask your CPA to confirm your deduction and federal and Massachusetts tax effects before you commit.
